English Day – November 2nd 2023
November 2nd was English Day here at Shizuoka Eiwa. On English Days our students and teachers are encouraged to use English at our school. This includes greetings in the corridors and directions in lessons being given in English. In addition, on English Day, myself or Jean gives a special morning service with the help of two students.
This time I spoke about the importance of education and the differences between schools in the UK and schools in Japan.

The biggest differences between schools in the UK and Japan is the names used for schools and the ages students attend them. For example, in Japan there are elementary schools, junior high schools and senior high schools but in the UK these schools are called primary school, secondary school and sixth form college. British primary and secondary schools are actually quite similar to Japanese schools but there are some very big differences when students go to senior high school or sixth form in the UK.
or example, there are no school uniforms, students have more choice over the subjects they study and students attend school for less time than students in Japan. This may seem great but British schools have less social events than schools in the Japan. For example, there are no sports days or club activities.

While schools are different around the world, I think it is important for young people to go to school and learn regardless of which country they live in. Around the world there are many people who sadly cannot attend school for various reasons and I hope that in the future more can be done to support children so that everyone has chance to attend school.
